More cousins marrying:
When I recently posted a list of ten notable people who had married cousins it struck me that this seemed like a very small number. My loyal friend came to my rescue and suggested looking in Wikipedia. I had not thought of doing so. It seems so obvious as a source that I wonder how I could have been so blind.
I have a lot of company.

The ten couples I found were not even the tip of the iceberg. And what you have here is a list that mostly takes an interest in first and second cousins and to a lesser extent third cousins. You can count them as well as I, but there are only four fourths cousin couples and a single fifth cousin once removed couple, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
For fertility purposes cousin marriages are good even out to about sixth cousins. And of course fertility is important in royal lines. If a line dies out, the government has no obvious choice of leader and bad things happen. So royalty has tended to marry royalty. This is no shrewd insight on their part; they probably are no better at keeping secrets than is any other government. It has simply worked out empirically at a tradition.
As the article points out, royalty is only the tip of the iceberg. And what you see here, limited as it is in extent, is only the tip of royalty. The iceberg is what has permitted us to survive. This is the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

This is a list of prominent individuals who have been romantically or maritally coupled with a cousin, niece, nephew, aunt or uncle.
Because many people regard cousin couplings as taboo, they mistakenly assume that an infrequent presence of coupled cousins in a lineage means that the descendants must have one or more genetic diseases. The risk of such diseases does rise, however, when a lineage includes many cousin couplings.
